Broadband for Beginners

A Guide To BroadBand: Let’s Start At The Very Beginning.

It’s a good place to start – so let’s take a look at the ABC of broadband before we go on to tell you about what is available and how you can make an informed choice when you know.

Internet Connections

Time was when most people had a dial up connection. Once broadband came in, it gave people a choice of an internet connection at a much faster speed. With dial-up, it means using the telephone line to access the Internet while broadband does not interfere with the phone line and offers you at least twice the speed that a dial up connection does. Being faster means that it downloads files faster and saves you time and money. All you have to do is to choose a monthly payment package depending on your needs. An ADSL broadband connection uses your phone line but the great thing is, you can use your phone as well while your broadband is on.

If you have a dial-up connection and want to switch to broadband, it’s an easy thing to do. Just get in touch with a broadband provider and he will set you up with all the equipment you need to connect your computer or laptop to a broadband connection. You’ll find that all of them offer very reasonably priced packages and you can start off with paying just £6 a month!

There’s more to Broadband…

You can surf and search for anything on the Internet and broadband makes it so much more enjoyable, What’s more, you can watch movies, listen to music, chat with people around the world, share files and find so much to educate and entertain you. You can even talk to loved ones whichever part of the world they are in, thanks to internet telephony or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). That’s why it makes so much more sense to get a broadband internet connection because you get so much for so little. This is the way to go today whether you want a new internet connection or whether you have a dial up connection and you want to upgrade to a better speed and maybe a better price.

Types of Broadband Connections

There are two different types of broadband connections that you can choose from. The first one is through your phone line and it is called ADSL or Asymmetric digital subscriber line and the second is through a cable. This is the choice that you have when you want a broadband connection. Many providers will quote the maximum speeds that their connection will give you but you must be prepared for speeds that are much lower especially at times when there is a lot of traffic. Some of the providers have upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 which is a wideband technology that offers much higher speeds and faster uploads and downloads today.

Choosing a Broadband Provider

What you will find on our site is an objective look at the various broadband providers in the UK, the packages they offer and the price they come at. Your choice of a broadband package will depend on your Internet usage and that perhaps is what you need to look at first, then you can choose the provider that you feel most comfortable with. Word of mouth is a strong factor in this choice and if you know someone who is happy with a provider in your area, it means you would look kindly at that provider too. All we are doing here is to give you the big picture so you know everything that is available and then make up your mind.
